Mounting pressure within the DMK-led alliance has led the party leadership to issue a firm ultimatum. They have instructed their partners to agree to the proposed seat-sharing arrangement by Monday or face potential delays in finalizing electoral plans. The upcoming Assembly elections on April 23 have intensified the urgency of these negotiations.
Despite several rounds of talks, key allies like the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), the CPI(M), and the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) have not yet agreed to the seat allocations proposed by the DMK. This lack of consensus has caused unease within the coalition at a critical juncture, especially as nomination processes are about to commence.
The VCK has been particularly vocal in expressing its discontent. Party leader Thol Thirumavalavan, through a strongly worded video message, has conveyed the party’s dissatisfaction with what they perceive as an insufficient allocation. However, there are indications of ongoing backchannel discussions, raising the possibility of a potential compromise.
The CPI(M) has been engaging in internal deliberations to evaluate its choices. The party leadership has held a series of high-level meetings to consider the DMK’s offer, which reportedly falls short of their expectations. While the Left party is carefully weighing its response, it has not yet communicated its final decision to the DMK.
The DMDK, a recent addition to the alliance, has stated that negotiations are still ongoing. Party officials have suggested that both the number of seats and the distribution of constituencies will only be determined once a mutually acceptable agreement is reached, highlighting the fluid nature of the discussions.
Further complicating matters, the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), led by Kamal Haasan, has declined the DMK’s proposal to contest under the alliance symbol. The MNM has expressed its intent to retain its own ‘Torch Light’ symbol, a stance that the DMK leadership is currently evaluating. As the deadline approaches, the upcoming days are crucial in shaping the final structure of the DMK-led alliance for the impending high-stakes electoral battle.
