Tamil Nadu’s Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) announced its decision not to attend the upcoming INDIA bloc meeting in New Delhi on June 8. The party cited internal discontent over what it perceives as the Congress party’s betrayal post the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. DMK expressed solidarity with its members’ sentiments, leading to its withdrawal from the meeting.
The DMK emphasized its unwavering commitment to upholding democracy, secularism, and states’ rights. It listed various contentious issues, including NEET, constituency delimitation, CAA implementation, Election Commission’s functioning, “One Nation, One Election” proposal, Waqf Act amendments, and changes to FCRA, where it has taken a principled stance. The party stated that it has consistently addressed these concerns through democratic channels, parliamentary debates, and legal actions when necessary.
Despite being a key pillar of the INDIA bloc since its inception, the DMK clarified its absence from the meeting involving Congress members. The party acknowledged its President M.K. Stalin’s significant role in national issues and its contributions to the opposition alliance. However, it underscored the importance of respecting its cadre’s sentiments post the Congress party’s actions in Tamil Nadu.
While opting out of the June 8 gathering, the DMK affirmed its dedication to voicing national interest matters. It assured that it would continue to express its opinions on topics discussed within the opposition bloc and other political forums.
