A senior doctor from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital’s Department of Internal Medicine has recommended staying away from direct sun exposure and maintaining hydration levels to cope with the ongoing heatwave across various parts of the country. The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh, predicting severe heat in the upcoming days. Dr. Atul Kakar highlighted three common heat-related issues faced by individuals, including heat exhaustion, cramps, and the critical condition of heat stroke.
Dr. Kakar stressed the importance of minimizing sun exposure, especially during peak hours from 12 to 3 p.m., and suggested using protective measures like umbrellas. He advised the intake of fluids like ORS water and lassi to stay hydrated, emphasizing these steps as crucial for self-protection. Additionally, he urged senior citizens and individuals with underlying health conditions to avoid direct sunlight exposure and maintain proper hydration to prevent adverse effects.
The doctor also cautioned against the indiscriminate use of medications and recommended following prescribed dosages strictly. He highlighted the vulnerability of patients with conditions such as cancer, kidney, and heart diseases to heat-related complications, underscoring the significance of timely medication and hydration. Dr. Kakar emphasized the necessity of medical advice before taking any additional medications to avoid potential risks.
