The security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch sector observed the movement of a drone along the Line of Control (LoC) on Friday. The drone was spotted over Gulpur village, prompting the security forces to open fire as it headed towards Siriyan village on the Pakistani side of the LoC.
Officials mentioned that drones have been utilized by terror groups, often with support from the Pakistani Army, to deliver arms, ammunition, cash, and drugs to terrorists along the LoC and the international border in J&K. These deliveries are typically collected by overground workers (OGWs) of the terrorist organizations.
To counter this threat, the army and the Border Security Force (BSF) guarding the LoC and international border respectively have introduced specialized anti-drone equipment. The LoC spans Kupwara, Baramulla, Bandipora, Poonch, Rajouri, and parts of Jammu districts, while the international border covers Samba, Kathua, and Jammu districts.
Security measures include army deployment on the LoC to prevent infiltration, smuggling, and drone activities originating from across the border, with BSF handling similar responsibilities on the international border. In the region, J&K Police and security forces conduct proactive operations against terrorists, their associates, drug smugglers, peddlers, and individuals involved in illicit financial activities believed to fund terrorism in J&K.
