The leaders of Britain, France, and Germany, known as the E3, have expressed backing for direct talks between Ukraine and Russia to achieve a ceasefire and progress peace negotiations. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a joint statement endorsing Ukraine-Russia dialogue with active involvement from the US and Europe.
They emphasized the need for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire, suggesting that the current contact line should be the starting point for discussions. The leaders highlighted the importance of Europe’s role in the peace process, emphasizing close coordination with Ukraine, European partners, and the United States.
Post-ceasefire security arrangements for Ukraine were also discussed, with a focus on safeguarding European security interests in any agreement. The statement underscored that matters concerning the European Union and NATO would require the consent of their respective members.
Ukrainian President Zelensky, in an open letter, proposed a face-to-face meeting with Russian President Putin to discuss the peace process. He urged direct engagement between the two countries, suggesting involvement from Europe and the US. Zelensky emphasized the importance of setting a clear meeting date and readiness to observe a full ceasefire during negotiations.
