The Democratic Republic of the Congo has seen a surge in confirmed Ebola cases, now totaling 515 with 91 fatalities, according to the latest health ministry update. The report highlighted the importance of swift implementation of control measures to prevent further escalation.
As of June 6, 12 patients have recovered from the virus, while 117 suspected cases are under observation. The health ministry emphasized the urgency of addressing the situation promptly to avoid a potential spike in infections.
The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, was officially announced on May 15. Challenges such as inadequate contact tracing, community resistance to testing, and resource shortages continue to hinder response efforts, posing a significant threat to containment.
Laboratory testing capacity remains strained, with pending results due to reagent shortages in North Kivu province. The report underscored the need for enhanced measures and resources to combat the spread of the disease effectively.
