The Economic Survey 2025-26, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, focuses on the government’s goal to double farmers’ income. It aims to achieve this through productivity enhancement, policy reforms, and institutional interventions. Agriculture, contributing nearly one-fifth of India’s national income, remains crucial for inclusive growth and food security.
A range of mission-mode programs has been initiated to meet these objectives. The National Food Security Mission, now known as the National Food Security and Nutrition Mission, covers various crops like rice, wheat, pulses, and commercial crops. Additionally, missions on oilseeds and oil palm are in place to enhance self-sufficiency in oilseed production.
Efforts are underway to boost domestic edible oil production, with a target of nearly 70 million tonnes by 2030-31. Initiatives like the Mission for Atmanirbharta in pulses and the Prime Minister Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana aim to reduce import dependency and enhance agricultural productivity. Insurance support through schemes like Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana plays a vital role in safeguarding farmers against crop losses.
