The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has apprehended a key figure from an organized illegal IPL betting group under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. Alok Kumar Jain was taken into custody by the Guwahati Zonal Office, Assam, for his involvement in managing and settling IPL bets through foreign online betting platforms. Jain, as per the agency, was the primary operator of the syndicate and conducted betting transactions via platforms like “Sky Exchange,” “WIFI Exchange,” and “Bull Intraconnect.”
The investigation uncovered that Jain established a complex network of mule bank accounts to obscure and layer the proceeds from illicit betting activities. By leveraging Know Your Customer (KYC) documents from his staff, he opened multiple bank accounts tied to his personal mobile number, allegedly using them to funnel betting earnings without the account holders’ knowledge. The ED revealed that the illegal funds were funneled into the legitimate economy through investments in bullion, gold, luxury items, and real estate.
Financial records seized during the probe indicated significant sums of money flowing through business channels and being converted into high-value assets swiftly. Furthermore, the agency alleged that Jain’s reported income in tax filings was notably lower than his purported asset holdings, financial dealings, loans, transfers, and control over various properties. Given Jain’s existing judicial detention in a related case, the ED secured a production warrant from the Special Court (PMLA), Guwahati, before arresting him under Section 19(1) of the PMLA. The court has granted the ED a four-day custody period to delve deeper into the alleged proceeds of crime generated and laundered by the accused.
