Enforcement Directorate (ED) teams are conducting search operations at various locations in and around Kolkata, including the residences of Trinamool Congress legislator Madan Mitra. The searches are related to the multi-crore cash-for-municipality jobs case in West Bengal. Mitra’s two residences, one in Bhabanipur and the other in Kamarhati, are under scrutiny.
Sources familiar with the situation mentioned that multiple ED teams, accompanied by central armed police forces (CAPF) personnel, are involved in the search operations at a total of seven locations in Kolkata. The searches at Mitra’s residences are linked to alleged irregularities in appointments at Kamarhati Municipality in North 24 Parganas district.
In a recent development, Mitra expressed concern over the treatment of Kamarhati Municipality Chairman Gopal Saha and urged all Trinamool councillors to resign. Former Trinamool Congress legislator Sujit Bose, who was arrested by the ED last month in connection with the municipalities jobs case, remains in judicial custody. Bose is accused of involvement in appointment irregularities in South Dum Dum Municipality and other money-laundering cases in North 24 Parganas district.
The Calcutta High Court rejected Bose’s plea to quash the enforcement case information report (ECIR) filed against him by the ED. Instead, the court advised him to file a bail plea and denied his request for a fast-track hearing in the matter.
