The Enforcement Directorate’s probe into a criminal-linked syndicate has uncovered that Kolkata Police officer Shantanu Sinha Biswas has not handed over his two mobile phones to investigators. This revelation comes amidst former Trinamool Congress MLA Jiban Krishna Saha discarding his phones in a pond during an ED search at his residence in Murshidabad. Concerns have arisen regarding whether Shantanu employed a similar tactic to eliminate evidence.
Questions have emerged about the whereabouts of Shantanu’s mobile phones after he failed to present them at the ED office on May 15. Despite his subsequent arrest, no phones were confiscated from him. Detectives are skeptical of Shantanu’s claim that the phones were lost, emphasizing the critical role mobile devices play in modern crime investigations.
ED sources disclosed that businessman Joy Kamdar, also implicated in the syndicate case, had a mobile phone containing vital documents pertinent to the inquiry. Detectives have unearthed incriminating communication evidence between arrested individuals, shedding light on the alleged land occupation scheme. While other suspects’ phones have been seized, Shantanu’s phones have remained elusive, raising suspicions of evidence tampering.
Authorities suspect that Shantanu, being aware of the incriminating potential of his phones, might have deliberately concealed or destroyed them. The possibility of retrieving deleted data using forensic tools strengthens the accusation of evidence destruction against him. ED officials are now focused on tracing the missing devices to ascertain the extent of their involvement in the ongoing investigation.
