Three individuals, including an elderly woman, were saved from floodwaters near Ahmedabad after being stranded for nearly 11 hours. The rescue operation, conducted jointly by the district administration and Ahmedabad Rural Police, took place amidst heavy rainfall disrupting normal life in the city and surrounding areas.
The trio had been trapped in rising floodwaters since 3 p.m. on Thursday due to continuous rainfall causing severe waterlogging. As darkness fell and adverse weather conditions worsened, their situation became critical, complicating rescue efforts.
Despite heavy rain and poor visibility, a rescue team comprising the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Dholka, the Police Inspector of Dholka Rural Police Station, and district administration officials successfully reached the stranded group by boat around 2 a.m. All three individuals were safely evacuated to a secure location.
Heavy rainfall persisted in Ahmedabad, with the Bopal-Ghuma area receiving 491 mm (19.64 inches) of rain by morning. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) intensified water drainage operations in flooded areas and bolstered rescue and relief endeavors.
Road connectivity was disrupted, leading to the closure of the Bangodara-Sanathal Highway by Ahmedabad Rural Police. Diversions were arranged for commuters, while some underpasses, including Income Tax, Usmanpura, Nirnay Nagar, and Pragatinagar, remained fully operational.
