The Election Commission of India has appointed 11 additional police observers for the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly polls on April 29. These observers, coming from other states, aim to enhance security measures for the upcoming phase. The decision follows efforts to prevent any incidents of tension or violence during the election process.
With the new appointments, the total number of police observers in West Bengal now stands at 95. Initially, 84 police observers were deployed for the elections, a number that has been increased for the second phase. Special attention is being given to sensitive areas, with state police ensuring the security of the newly appointed officers.
In a separate move, the ECI has suspended five police officers from the Diamond Harbour Police District over allegations of dereliction of duty. Among them are an additional superintendent of police and a sub-division police officer. The Commission has also warned the Superintendent of Diamond Harbour Police District for inadequate supervision of her subordinates.
