The Election Commission of India has announced a ban on the conduct, publication, or dissemination of Exit Polls throughout the ongoing Assembly election cycle. This ban will be in effect from 7 A.M. on April 9, when polling begins, until 6.30 P.M. on April 29, after the conclusion of polling across all phases. The order, issued under the Representation of the People Act, 1951, prohibits the display or publicizing of Exit Poll results through any form of communication during this specified period.

Tamil Nadu is set to vote on April 23, with polling scheduled between 7 A.M. and 6 P.M. The State is witnessing a fierce electoral battle, with major political parties and alliances intensifying their campaigns in the lead-up to the election day. Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik emphasized that strict restrictions on Opinion Polls and related election content will also be in place during the final phase of campaigning.

During the 48-hour period leading up to the close of polling in a State, the law prohibits the display of any election-related content, including Opinion Poll results or survey findings, on electronic media. This “silence period” aims to provide voters with a tranquil environment to make their electoral choices without external influence. The Election Commission of India has a history of enforcing these regulations in past elections to maintain the integrity of the electoral process.

Any breach of these guidelines will result in penal action under the Representation of the People Act and other relevant laws. Media organizations, digital platforms, and political entities have been urged to strictly comply with these regulations. With election activities escalating in Tamil Nadu and other poll-bound regions, the enforcement of these restrictions is crucial in ensuring a fair electoral process.
