The Election Commission in West Bengal has decreased the number of counting centers in preparation for the vote count. Initially reduced from 108 to 87, the centers have now been further cut down to 77. All 294 Assembly constituencies’ votes will be tallied at these 77 centers across the state.
In the previous 2016 Assembly elections, 90 centers were used for counting in the state. This number was raised to 108 for the 2021 elections but has since been reduced to 87 and now to 77. The Trinamool Congress has raised concerns about this adjustment of counting centers before the vote count.
State Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Agrawal mentioned that the number of centers could potentially be decreased even more than the current 77 if necessary. He stated that a decision on this matter will be made following a thorough examination of the situation.
According to district-wise data, the counting centers are distributed across various districts in West Bengal, with Kolkata having five centers for its 11 Assembly constituencies. The state’s highest number of Assembly constituencies in North 24 Parganas will see votes counted at seven centers for 33 seats.
