The Election Commission has scheduled the biennial election for a vacant Rajya Sabha seat from Tamil Nadu on June 18. This marks the first Upper House contest involving the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led government since it came to power. The seat became available after C Ve Shanmugam resigned from the Rajya Sabha post-election to the Tamil Nadu Assembly.
The upcoming poll is expected to spark political discussions regarding candidate selection and alliance dynamics within the ruling coalition. The election process will kick off with the issuance of notifications on June 1, allowing nominations to be filed. The deadline for submitting nomination papers is set for June 8, with scrutiny scheduled for June 9. Candidates can withdraw their nominations until June 11.
If required, polling will be conducted on June 18, with vote counting taking place on the same day. This election gains significance against the backdrop of the altered political scenario in Tamil Nadu post the Assembly elections that brought Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay-led TVK to power.
Despite the single vacancy, political observers are closely monitoring the ruling coalition’s strategy, as this seat offers an opportunity for TVK to bolster its presence in New Delhi. With the current effective strength of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly at 233 members, a candidate needs the support of 117 MLAs for victory.
Given the absence of a clear majority for any single party, the election’s outcome is likely to hinge on alliance dynamics. The TVK-led alliance currently holds a numerical advantage, positioning it as the front-runner for securing the seat. However, attention is now shifting to whether TVK will field its own candidate or allocate the Rajya Sabha berth to an alliance partner as part of coalition management.
Of particular interest is the Congress, which played a pivotal role in supporting the TVK-led government. Speculation is rife in political circles about discussions on accommodating allies gaining momentum as the nomination process nears.
