In a tragic incident at the Dubare Elephant Camp in Karnataka, the elephant Marthanda, which suffered severe injuries during a clash with another captive elephant named Kanjan, has passed away. The clash resulted in the death of a tourist from Tamil Nadu, S. Junese, who was crushed under Marthanda during the fight. The state government has closed the camp for tourists for two days following the unfortunate event.
Marthanda sustained internal injuries and was unable to get up after collapsing during the attack. Veterinarians suspect excessive blood loss affected its heart function, leading to its demise. The tusker Kanjan, which initiated the attack, prevented Marthanda from rising, causing critical injuries.
Authorities have shut down the Dubare Elephant Camp for two days after the tragic incident involving the clash between the captive elephants. Tourist entry has been prohibited due to safety concerns arising from the close interaction with the animals. The camp, usually bustling with activity, now remains deserted in the wake of the unfortunate events.
Karnataka Minister N.S. Boseraju expressed deep sorrow over Marthanda’s death, acknowledging the pain felt by the camp staff and animal enthusiasts. The incident, which claimed the life of a tourist and injured her husband, occurred when the elephants, Marthanda and Kanjan, engaged in a fight during a routine bathing activity at the camp.
