A mishap occurred at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata, West Bengal, when an elevator cable broke during maintenance work, causing serious injuries to three laborers. The incident happened at elevator number 34 in the airport’s bus lounge around 1 p.m. The elevator had been under repair for several days before the cable suddenly snapped during maintenance, leading to the accident.
The elevator descended abruptly on the workers in the shaft, resulting in injuries to several individuals, with three of them sustaining severe injuries. One of the injured workers suffered multiple fractured ribs, while the other two had head injuries and trauma to their lower bodies. Concerns exist that one of the workers may have incurred neurological damage. All three are currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
Airport authorities in Kolkata have cordoned off the area near the affected lift and are conducting maintenance work. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident. Notably, a similar incident occurred on March 19 when Arup Banerjee lost his life in a lift accident at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata while seeking medical treatment for his son. The preliminary post-mortem report revealed multiple injuries, including fractures to his limbs and internal organs.
