An employee working at an RBI currency chest in a Bank of Baroda branch in Ahmedabad’s Kalupur area has been apprehended for allegedly embezzling Rs 8.70 crore over a span of more than four months. The accused, identified as Harshsiddh Kadiyara (42), was taken into custody by the Local Crime Branch (LCB) Zone-3 from Everest Enclave on Sola NFC Road.
Kadiyara, a resident of Chandkheda in Ahmedabad, was serving as a joint custodian at the RBI currency chest located at the Bank of Baroda branch on Gandhi Road in Kalupur. Authorities stated that he manipulated official records on the “e-Kuber Currency Chest” portal between January 6 and May 13, resulting in criminal breach of trust and theft of the substantial amount.
Police investigations revealed that the accused falsified chest balance certificates and slips on the portal, along with entering deceptive information in accounts and books to cover up the alleged misappropriation. A case was filed at Kalupur police station on May 15 under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
Efforts are underway to recover the remaining embezzled sum, with property worth Rs 2,26,35,500 seized so far, including Rs 2.20 crore in cash found hidden in an Ertiga car, a vehicle valued at Rs six lakh, and three mobile phones collectively worth Rs 35,500. Allegedly, Kadiyara executed the theft with the aid of two accomplices involved in loading and unloading operations at the bank.
