The Enforcement Directorate apprehended Biswajit Poddar, also known as Sona Pappu, for his involvement in a financial fraud and extortion scheme. Poddar, who had been missing, voluntarily appeared at the Enforcement Directorate office in Salt Lake, leading to his arrest after a nine-hour interrogation session.
Poddar’s name had emerged in connection with a clash at Rabindra Sarovar police station last February, where locals accused him of instigating the violence. Despite being in hiding, Poddar had made public appearances on Facebook denying any wrongdoing. In April, the Enforcement Directorate raided his residence and seized valuable assets, including a foreign pistol allegedly procured through businessman Joy Kamdar.
Allegations of extortion and threats, along with multiple FIRs, had been lodged against Poddar, prompting the Enforcement Directorate’s investigation. The agency had previously arrested Joy Kamdar and Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner Shantanu Sinha Biswas in connection with the case. Poddar’s sudden appearance at the Enforcement Directorate office without prior notice led to his arrest for non-cooperation with the investigation.
