The Enforcement Directorate has pressed charges against Biswajit Poddar, also known as Sona Pappu, for his involvement in a syndicate and corruption case. Poddar allegedly acquired land and property from individuals at low prices through intimidation tactics. The agency has identified a group of three individuals, including Poddar, in connection with the case.
The Enforcement Directorate revealed that Poddar had links to Behala businessman Joy Kamdar and Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner Shantanu Sinha Biswas. Poddar is accused of playing a significant role in the land syndicate. Seeking a 10-day custody of Poddar, the agency detailed his alleged activities during a court hearing.
Following a nine-hour interrogation, Poddar was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate and presented in court the next day. The agency disclosed multiple charges against Poddar, ranging from extortion and threats to land grabbing and illegal possession of weapons. Notably, Poddar is identified as the primary accused in these charges.
During a search at Poddar’s residence, the Enforcement Directorate reportedly recovered a revolver, registered under Joy Kamdar’s organization, leading to unrest in the Kankulia area earlier this year. Poddar’s lawyer defended the firearm purchase process, emphasizing compliance with legal requirements. Poddar had been linked to a previous incident of unrest in February.
The Enforcement Directorate alleged that Poddar’s group exploited elderly landowners by purchasing properties significantly below market value. They purportedly controlled local businessmen through various construction and real estate companies. Poddar’s lawyer countered these claims, asserting that his client’s business dealings were legitimate and not associated with corruption.
