England men’s cricket director Rob Key addressed recent criticism from all-rounder Liam Livingstone, emphasizing Livingstone’s continued consideration for national selection despite disagreements over communication and team dynamics. Livingstone, absent from the England setup since the ICC Champions Trophy last year, voiced concerns about the management’s avoidance of tough discussions and implied that his future hinged on internal changes. Key, in response, defended his stance without delving into specifics of their exchange.
Key refrained from disclosing private conversations, stating, “There’s no way I see a player of Liam Livingstone’s ability not being up for selection for England.” He highlighted Livingstone’s potential pathway back into the team, mentioning that selectors had contemplated his return earlier this year. Key encouraged Livingstone to concentrate on his performance, assuring that a player of his caliber remains in contention if he regains form and scores runs.
Highlighting Livingstone’s leadership qualities, Key recalled an instance when Livingstone was considered for captaincy during an ODI series against the West Indies in 2024. Key expressed admiration for Livingstone, asserting that at 32, there is no reason why his England career should be deemed over. While Livingstone characterized the England setup as clique-driven, Key refuted the claim, acknowledging that disagreements are typical in high-performance environments and reaffirming that selection decisions will be merit-based.
Livingstone has now joined the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 in India, securing a 13 crore deal with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) during the auction.
