World Cup-winning England captain Heather Knight has announced her retirement from international cricket after the ongoing one-off Test match against India at Lord’s, marking the end of her 16-year career. Knight, who debuted in 2010, holds the record for the most appearances for England women with 320 caps across Tests, ODIs, and T20Is, amassing 7,988 runs and achieving six centuries. She led the team in 199 matches from 2016 to 2025, including the victorious 2017 ICC Women’s World Cup campaign at Lord’s.
Expressing gratitude for her cricket journey, Knight mentioned the profound impact of her teammates and experiences on her life. She reflected on her childhood dreams and the historic significance of concluding her career at Lord’s, emphasizing her contentment with the decision to retire. Knight, who also served as the general manager of London Spirit women’s team, highlighted her excitement for the future beyond cricket.
Knight’s retirement follows her recent role as a pivotal figure in English cricket, notably as the first player, male or female, to achieve centuries in all three international formats. Despite her modest contribution of 6 runs in the ongoing Test against India, Knight’s legacy as a trailblazer in women’s cricket remains intact. Her retirement will see her join fellow teammate Tammy Beaumont in bidding farewell to the sport.
