Rising tensions among the United States, China, and Russia are prompting Europe and Canada to enhance their economic and strategic ties with India, positioning the country as a significant global player, a recent report highlighted. According to the report by National Interest, Europe and Canada are compelled to strengthen relations with India due to the hostile environment created by the US, China, and Russia. The report emphasized that India, with its expanding manufacturing sector, competitive labor costs, improving legal framework, technological capabilities, and large domestic market, serves as a promising third force in the global economy.
Europe and Canada are increasingly turning towards India for strategic partnerships, including trade agreements and defense technology collaborations, as they grapple with the uncertainties stemming from the US and challenges associated with deepening engagements with China. The report pointed out that the pressure exerted by US President Donald Trump on India regarding Russian oil has notably eased, especially compared to the tougher stance taken against Europe. Leaders from major European nations like France, Britain, Germany, and Spain are either visiting Beijing or preparing for meetings to secure market access amid US tariff threats and strained political ties.
Despite their efforts to diversify away from China due to concerns over supply chain vulnerabilities, national security risks, and China’s alignment with Russia, European leaders face criticism for prioritizing economic gains over democratic values. The report highlighted that European governments are under scrutiny from voters and human rights advocates for allegedly compromising on principles for commercial interests, which has become a contentious issue domestically.
