The European Union’s Global Gateway initiative is emerging as a rival to China’s Belt and Road Initiative, offering a more transparent and sustainable approach to global infrastructure financing. Launched in 2021 with a €300 billion investment target for 2021–2027, the EU’s program focuses on infrastructure development in digital connectivity, clean energy, transport, health, education, and climate-related projects. Unlike the BRI’s centralized financing, the Global Gateway initiative blends grants, concessional financing, and private investment, prioritizing transparency, sustainability, and partnership-driven development.
The EU’s initiative emphasizes good governance, democratic values, environmental sustainability, and private sector participation as fundamental principles. Noteworthy projects under the Global Gateway initiative include the Lobito Corridor in Africa, aimed at enhancing transport connectivity between Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Zambia to reduce cargo transit times and enhance regional trade integration. Additionally, the initiative has extended into Central Asia through transport and logistics corridors to bolster trade connectivity with Europe.
