Palm oil plays a vital role in ensuring India’s edible oil security and reducing import reliance, experts highlighted at a recent event. Emphasizing the need for credible evidence before defaming palm oil, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India stressed the importance of evidence-based public messaging. Dr. Alka Rao from FSSAI noted the widespread use of palm oil in Indian households and the food industry due to its stability and suitability for high-temperature cooking.
India’s apex food regulator, FSSAI, remains committed to promoting evidence-based nutrition awareness and encouraging informed dietary choices among consumers. A recent conference organized by PHDCCI and AYUSH Committee brought together industry, hospital, and academia representatives to discuss palm oil science, food labels, and the truth about saturated and trans fats. Dr. Shri Rishi Kant highlighted India’s efforts to boost domestic palm oil cultivation to enhance edible oil security and reduce import dependence.
Dr. Vivek Srivastav emphasized the balanced fatty acid profile and beneficial antioxidants of palm oil when consumed in moderation. He also pointed out that palm oil is one of the most efficient oil crops and sustainable production practices are being adopted globally. Dr. Narendra Tripathi highlighted that palm oil, being the most consumed vegetable oil globally, significantly contributes to meeting the edible oil demand in India and worldwide.
