External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar encouraged young minds at IIT Madras to envision India as a civilization influencing the world’s future. Addressing students and faculty, Jaishankar discussed democracy, diplomacy, and India’s evolving international role. He highlighted India’s transition from an ancient civilization to a modern nation-state, emphasizing its historical consciousness and unique global perspective.

Jaishankar emphasized India’s distinctive trajectory as a civilizational power and its role in shaping a modern, multi-polar world. He praised India as one of the few ancient civilizations that successfully transformed into a contemporary nation-state. The minister underscored India’s adoption of democracy at Independence, making it a universal concept rooted in cultural and social diversity, ensuring inclusivity and representation.

On foreign policy and regional security, Jaishankar stressed India’s commitment to national sovereignty. He asserted India’s right to defend itself and independently decide responses to threats or terrorism. Emphasizing clear communication in diplomacy to avoid misunderstandings, Jaishankar advocated for partnerships based on mutual respect and transparent dialogue.

Reflecting on global challenges, Jaishankar highlighted India’s humanitarian efforts during the Covid-19 pandemic. He cited India’s vaccine assistance to other nations as a significant global contribution, demonstrating India’s dedication to international stability. Jaishankar urged the academic community to uphold a global perspective while staying connected to Indian values.
