External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is scheduled to undertake an official visit to Jamaica, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago from May 2-10, as announced by the Ministry of External Affairs. These nations hold a significant historical connection with India due to the presence of Girmitiya communities, descendants of Indian indentured laborers who migrated to British colonies in the 19th century. During the visit, the Minister will engage with the leadership of these countries, discussing various aspects of bilateral relations and regional and global issues of common interest.

The term ‘Girmitiyas’ refers to the Indian laborers who signed agreements, known as ‘Girmit’, to work in the colonies. The visit aims to strengthen India’s diplomatic ties with Jamaica, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago, emphasizing the commitment to South-South cooperation and development. Apart from official meetings, the Minister is expected to interact with business leaders and the Indian community in these nations, fostering stronger people-to-people connections.

In addition to the planned engagements, the External Affairs Minister recently welcomed the establishment of the High Commission of St Kitts and Nevis in India, underscoring the significance of resident diplomatic missions in enhancing bilateral relationships. He acknowledged the mutual support between India and St Kitts and Nevis in various cooperation initiatives, including the International Solar Alliance. Furthermore, EAM Jaishankar commended St Kitts and Nevis on assuming the chairmanship of Caricom earlier this year, highlighting the enduring ties between India and Caricom countries.

Jamaica, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago are members of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), reflecting their shared regional affiliations and partnerships.
