FIFA President Gianni Infantino revealed that he recently met with US President Donald Trump to talk about Iran’s involvement in the upcoming 2026 World Cup. Despite uncertainties due to regional tensions, Iran is set to play three matches in the US as part of the tournament. The Iranian team, placed in Group G with Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand, will kick off their matches on June 15 in Seattle.
Infantino shared on Instagram that his conversation with Trump also touched on the status of World Cup preparations and the current situation in Iran. Trump expressed that Iran is welcome to compete in the tournament hosted by the US, Mexico, and Canada. Iran secured its spot in the World Cup by finishing on top of Group A during Asian qualifying rounds last year.
In a recent interview, Trump mentioned his indifference towards Iran’s participation, stating his perception of Iran as a country facing significant challenges. The President of the Iran Football Federation, Mehdi Taj, expressed concerns following military actions, indicating a sense of pessimism towards the World Cup amidst the prevailing circumstances.
