The International Hockey Federation (FIH) will increase the participating teams in the FIH Hockey Nations Cup and the FIH Hockey Nations Cup 2 from eight to ten teams starting from the next edition. This expansion will add eight more teams to these events annually, with the Nations Cup and Nations Cup 2 being part of the FIH Pro League structure. The winner of the Nations Cup will earn a spot in the FIH Pro League for the following season.
In a move to provide more opportunities and streamline the qualification process, the FIH Hockey Nations Cup 2 will become an annual event starting in 2027. This decision aims to offer consistent exposure to teams at this level. FIH President Tayyab Ikram expressed satisfaction with these developments, emphasizing the importance of equal opportunities for athletes and nations to grow and compete.
The Nations Cup, set to take place in the coming days for the fourth time, has become a significant event in the global hockey calendar for players and fans alike. Following the success of the inaugural editions of the Nations Cup 2 last year, there has been a strong demand from participating teams to host this event annually. The qualification system has been adjusted accordingly to accommodate the expanded team participation.
The increase in the number of teams also means that no team will face relegation from this year’s FIH Hockey Nations Cup. The tournament is scheduled to begin in Cape Town, South Africa for the Men’s category and in Auckland, New Zealand for the Women’s category on June 15.
