India commemorates the increasing role of women in the nation’s economic progress, with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman underscoring the significance of enhanced financial access for women’s autonomy. Sitharaman, in a social media post on International Women’s Day, praised initiatives like Jan Dhan accounts and the emergence of “Lakhpati Didis” for bolstering women’s financial strength and reshaping households and communities nationwide. Over 28 crore Jan Dhan accounts held by women are facilitating financial inclusion and bolstering their economic independence, as noted by FM Sitharaman.
Highlighting the evolving landscape, the Finance Minister stressed that women are not just economic participants but are increasingly becoming creators of wealth. More than three crore women have transformed into “Lakhpati Didis,” signifying rural women surpassing an annual income of Rs 1 lakh through self-help groups and entrepreneurial endeavors. Sitharaman emphasized that these women are not only contributing to the economy but also uplifting families and fortifying the rural economy.
In a similar vein, Union Minister Piyush Goyal lauded women’s role in nation-building, emphasizing the pivotal position of “Nari Shakti” in shaping a new India and asserting that empowering women is vital for the country’s advancement. Goyal highlighted the concerted efforts led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to create diverse opportunities for women across various sectors. He acknowledged women’s pivotal role in driving India’s progress across entrepreneurship, sports, defense, science, and rural development. Goyal called for a renewed commitment to bolstering women’s strength and aspirations, further enhancing their influence in shaping a more robust and prosperous India.
