Acting on the instructions of Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, immediate financial aid has been approved for Tarun Prasad Chakma, the father of Angel Chakma, a Tripura student who was brutally attacked in Dehradun and later passed away in the hospital. An amount of Rs 4,12,500 has been released as the first installment, with the cheque already dispatched to the victim’s family, as confirmed by an official from the Chief Minister’s Office.
The financial support has been granted under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, and the Protection of Civil Rights Act, 1955, according to the official. Angel Chakma, a 24-year-old final-year MBA student at a university in Uttarakhand and the son of a Border Security Force (BSF) constable, succumbed to his injuries on December 26 following the assault.
Reportedly, the student, who hailed from the Chakma tribal community, suffered severe injuries after an attack by a group of individuals on December 9, during which racial slurs were allegedly used. In response to Chief Minister Dhami’s directives, the case was forwarded to the District Social Welfare Officer, Dehradun, for prompt approval of relief to the victim’s family through the Senior Superintendent of Police, Dehradun.
Following a joint inquiry report from the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Vikasnagar, and the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Vikasnagar, the district-level committee expedited the approval process and granted the assistance. Subsequently, the first installment check was sent to Tarun Prasad Chakma, Angel Chakma’s father. Chief Minister Dhami personally expressed his condolences to Tarun Prasad Chakma over the phone on Monday, emphasizing that five suspects have been apprehended, with efforts ongoing to capture another accused, for whom a reward has been announced.
Ensuring full support to the grieving family, Dhami conveyed his deep sorrow over Angel Chakma’s demise and assured that the Uttarakhand government would ensure severe punishment for the perpetrators. Additionally, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha engaged with his Uttarakhand counterpart to discuss the incident, learning that five suspects have been arrested and detained, with the investigation progressing.
