An FIR has been registered against ex-North Bengal Development Minister Udayan Guha at the Mathabhanga police station in Cooch Behar district. The complaint was lodged by Bhawaiya folk singer Manindranath Barman, who accused Guha of threatening his life. Manindranath alleged that Guha had issued the threat after he composed a song highlighting corruption in the previous government.
Manindranath, accompanied by a lawyer, visited the police station to formally report the incident. He claimed that Udayan Guha had threatened him just before the Assembly elections for composing songs critical of the Trinamool government. The singer also mentioned that he had been living in hiding due to fear for his safety and had provided the police with all relevant information regarding the threats.
Before the elections, Trinamool spokesperson Partha Pratim Roy had visited Manindranath and presented a list of developmental works done by the Trinamool government. Manindranath revealed that his songs against the government had angered Udayan and other Trinamool leaders, leading to threats on his life. Despite attempts to reach Udayan Guha for comment, his phone remained switched off, and local Trinamool officials declined to address the issue.
Since the BJP came into power in the state, there has been a crackdown on alleged illegal activities involving Trinamool Congress members. The police have been actively pursuing cases against individuals linked to the Trinamool Congress accused of breaking the law. Over the past month, numerous Trinamool councillors statewide have been arrested on charges of corruption and extortion.
