A fire erupted in a luxury residence in Kolkata’s Tollygunge area on Sunday afternoon, prompting several luminaries from the Bengal film industry to evacuate the building. Fortunately, no injuries were reported despite the building being engulfed in black smoke.
The fire originated in Tower 2 of Diamond City Residence, where notable figures like film couple Yash and Nusrat, as well as actress and Trinamool Congress MLA Sayantika Banerjee, own flats. Yash and Nusrat, along with their children, hurriedly left their flat in response to the emergency, and all residents were safely evacuated.
Upon receiving the news, four fire engines were deployed to the scene. The fire, believed to have started on the fifth floor due to a short circuit, was swiftly contained by the police and fire brigade. Although no injuries occurred, concerns about potential property damage loomed large.
Local residents were gripped by panic following the incident. Sayantika Banerjee, when reached for comment, confirmed her safety and expressed relief at not being present during the fire. Director Shubhrajit Mitra, a resident of the building, recounted the events leading up to the fire, citing a possible cause related to a religious ritual involving a lamp.
Actor couple Yash and Nusrat, residing one floor above the fire’s origin, acted swiftly to ensure their family’s safety by evacuating the building. This incident follows a recent fire at the Globcine Crystal Building in Salt Lake Sector Five, where a multinational organization’s employee fell ill due to smoke inhalation.
