A tragic incident at a fireworks plant in Hunan Province, China, resulted in 21 fatalities and 61 injuries. The explosion, which occurred at Huasheng fireworks manufacturing and display company in Liuyang, prompted a massive rescue operation involving over 480 rescuers and three rescue robots.
Authorities have evacuated nearby residents and established a buffer zone around the explosion site due to its proximity to black powder warehouses. By 8 a.m. Tuesday, rescuers had confirmed the casualties and were conducting a second round of searches while the injured received medical treatment.
The Ministry of Emergency Management has sent experts to oversee the rescue efforts, and the company’s head has been detained by the police pending an investigation into the cause of the accident. President Xi Jinping has called for intensive search and rescue operations, as well as a thorough inquiry to hold accountable those responsible for the tragedy.
Liuyang city, known for its fireworks production, is recognized as the world’s largest fireworks manufacturer. Unfortunately, incidents like this are not uncommon in China, with previous deadly explosions reported in fireworks facilities and shops across the country.
