Five individuals have been apprehended in Assam’s Cachar district for allegedly operating an illicit betting scheme associated with the Indian Premier League (IPL). Acting on specific information, the Cachar Police initiated a crackdown in Silchar town, detaining the primary suspect, Samir Azij. Subsequently, four more suspects, identified as Saibul Hussain Laskar, Zahir Hussain Laskar, Rajat Kumar Singh, and Aftab Laskar, were arrested.
During the operation, authorities seized Rs 80,230 in cash, seven Android mobile phones, a notebook with betting-related calculations, and four sheets used for recording IPL bets. The seized mobile phones are believed to have facilitated bet coordination, communication with punters, and digital transaction tracking related to the illicit gambling activities. The notebooks and handwritten records are currently under scrutiny as part of the investigation.
All confiscated items were processed in accordance with legal protocols, and the accused were presented before a local court. A case has been filed at Silchar Police Station under applicable laws, with ongoing efforts to determine the extent of involvement of additional individuals in the betting network. Authorities are also exploring potential financial connections, online payment avenues, and external contacts associated with the racket.
Law enforcement agencies are heightening vigilance during prominent sporting events like the IPL to combat the surge in unlawful betting operations. Police sources have affirmed the continuation of actions against organized gambling networks, especially during the cricket season. Citizens are urged to report any suspicious betting behaviors and refrain from engaging in illegal gambling, cautioning against the risks of financial fraud and criminal involvement.
The recent crackdown aligns with intensified policing initiatives in Assam targeting narcotics, cybercrime, and unauthorized betting syndicates operating through mobile platforms and informal networks.
