Five individuals lost their lives, and 42 others, including children, were hurt in a tragic accident in Madurai district, Tamil Nadu. The incident occurred when a private omni bus collided head-on with a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) bus near Kottampatti. The private bus, en route from Chennai to Marthandam, lost control and crossed into the opposite lane, crashing into the TNSTC bus.
The collision was so intense that the private bus careened off the highway, hitting a passenger shelter, while the TNSTC bus overturned due to the impact. Emergency services and locals swiftly responded to the scene, initiating a rigorous rescue operation.
Rescue teams employed specialized equipment to free trapped passengers from the wrecked buses before transferring the injured to awaiting ambulances. Hospital sources revealed that among the injured, some are in critical condition and are closely monitored.
Preliminary findings suggest that the private bus driver might have lost control before the crash. However, a thorough investigation, including vehicle inspections and survivor testimonies, is required to determine the exact cause. The accident caused alarm among commuters and locals, leading to traffic disruptions for several hours.
Authorities have initiated a comprehensive probe into the tragic incident, examining factors such as speeding, driver fatigue, or mechanical issues.
