At least five people died and around 50 others were injured in a bus accident on Interstate 95 in Virginia. The crash occurred near a work zone when a motorcoach hit multiple vehicles. US Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy expressed concern over driver licensing and training standards following the incident.
Duffy mentioned that among the deceased were a 13-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy. The driver, a Chinese man who later became a US citizen, did not speak English. He obtained his commercial driver’s license from New York State in 2024, which Duffy criticized as unacceptable. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The bus, operated by E&P Travel, was en route from New York City to Charlotte, North Carolina when the accident happened. Reports indicate that the bus failed to slow down for traffic, leading to a collision with six vehicles. The crash resulted in fatalities, including four occupants of an Acura SUV and one person in a Chevrolet Suburban, which caught fire.
Federal agencies such as the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) are conducting investigations into the driver’s history, licensing records, and the company’s operational compliance. The bus driver may face charges as the inquiry progresses.
