Five US States Declare January 26 as “Republic Day of India”

Five American states, including Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Nebraska, and South Dakota, have officially recognized January 26, 2026, as the “Republic Day of India.” This date marks the 77th anniversary of India’s Constitution adoption and celebrates the contributions of the Indian and Indian American communities to these states.

The governors of these states issued separate proclamations emphasizing India’s status as the world’s largest democracy. They highlighted shared values such as democracy, innovation, and economic growth, as well as the strengthening partnerships between the two nations.

Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy highlighted the significance of January 26, 2026, as India’s 77th Republic Day, commemorating the adoption of the Indian Constitution. The proclamation acknowledged the Indian community’s substantial contributions to Alaska’s cultural diversity, educational excellence, and economic prosperity.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek also recognized January 26, 2026, as India’s 77th Republic Day, emphasizing the importance of enhancing bilateral relations with India. The proclamation praised the Indian community for enriching Oregon’s cultural fabric, academic standards, and economic vibrancy.

Governor Bob Ferguson of Washington State issued a proclamation honoring the strong ties between Washington and India. He commended the Indian American community for their contributions to various sectors like science, technology, education, business, arts, and civic engagement. The proclamation highlighted the expanding partnerships in trade, technology, clean energy, agriculture, and cultural exchanges between Washington and India.

Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen declared January 26, 2026, as the “Republic Day of India” in the state, recognizing the Indian community’s significant role in Nebraska’s cultural diversity, educational excellence, and economic vitality. The proclamation also mentioned the increasing collaborations between Nebraska and India in trade, technology, agriculture, and cultural interactions.

Governor Larry Rhoden of South Dakota issued an executive proclamation designating January 26, 2026, as India’s Republic Day. The proclamation emphasized the importance of strengthening ties with India, acknowledged the contributions of the Indian community to South Dakota’s cultural and economic landscape, and highlighted the growing cooperation in trade, technology, and agriculture.
