A tragic incident occurred at the Asarigawa Onsen Ski Resort in Otaru, Japan, where a five-year-old boy’s right arm got caught in a travelator, leading to his untimely death. The boy, a resident of Sapporo, was trapped in a moving walkway connecting the parking area to the ski slope. Despite being rescued, he was unconscious and later pronounced dead at the hospital by local authorities.
According to reports, the walkway’s emergency stop function failed to activate automatically when the child became trapped, necessitating his mother to press the stop button. Officials mentioned that the emergency function, designed to halt the travelator in case of an obstruction, had functioned correctly during a routine inspection earlier that day.
Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident and assessing the adequacy of safety measures at the ski resort. Meanwhile, in a separate incident on December 25, a fire broke out at a 10-story apartment building in Niigata City, central Japan, resulting in multiple injuries. Firefighters were on-site battling the blaze in the downtown area of Niigata City, surrounded by restaurants and residential buildings.
