Florentino Perez revealed that Jose Mourinho could come back as the head coach of Real Madrid if he wins the club presidency in the upcoming elections. Mourinho’s intention to return to the team he managed from 2010 to 2013 has been widely known, especially after Marco Silva’s departure from Fulham.
Silva, who shares the same agent, Jorge Mendes, with Mourinho, is likely to join Benfica. Perez’s statement followed Enrique Riquelme’s announcement that Fernando Hierro might lead the club’s youth system if he wins the election. Hierro is set to collaborate with Raul Gonzalez, who Riquelme plans to appoint as Real Madrid’s director of football.
During Mourinho’s previous tenure at Real Madrid, the team secured a La Liga title, a Copa del Rey, and a Spanish Super Cup. His time at the club coincided with challenges from Pep Guardiola’s FC Barcelona, leading to strained relations between the two clubs and players, which impacted Spain’s 2014 World Cup performance. Perez’s commitment to bringing back Mourinho adds pressure on Riquelme to name his preferred head coach.
The upcoming elections mark the first contested vote at the club since 2006. The candidates are Perez, the incumbent president since 2009, and renewable energy businessman Riquelme. The club members will decide on Sunday between the experienced Perez and the younger Riquelme for the presidency.
