Former Afghanistan cricketer Shapoor Zadran, currently hospitalized in New Delhi, is in critical condition and urgently requires A-positive blood donors due to a rare and life-threatening immune disorder called Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). Zadran, who represented Afghanistan in 44 ODIs and 36 T20Is from 2009 to 2020, is battling stage four HLH, causing hyper-inflammation and tissue damage in vital organs like the bone marrow, liver, spleen, and lymph nodes.
Zadran’s younger brother, Ghamai Zadran, took to Instagram to make an emotional plea for blood donations to aid in Shapoor’s recovery. Ghamai highlighted the urgent need for blood due to Shapoor’s deteriorating health condition and emphasized the importance of support from well-wishers and donors during this challenging time.
Having fallen ill last October, Shapoor Zadran was advised to seek medical treatment in India, with the assistance of Rashid Khan and Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) chairman Mirwais Ashraf. Admitted to a New Delhi hospital on January 18, a subsequent bone marrow test in late March confirmed the severity of his HLH condition. Ghamai shared that Shapoor’s health had seen some improvement initially, but a recent infection led to complications, including a dengue diagnosis, highlighting the fragility of his immune system.
Shapoor’s brother expressed optimism about his recovery, noting the positive effects of recent steroid treatments. Despite the challenges, the family remains hopeful for Shapoor’s gradual improvement and is grateful for the medical interventions and support received thus far.
