Former Afghanistan fast bowler Shapoor Zadran, a key figure in Afghan cricket, has passed away in India at the age of 38, with his 39th birthday just a day away. Zadran, who played in 44 ODIs and 36 T20Is from 2009 to 2020, had been battling stage four haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a severe and rare condition, in New Delhi since last year.
His health struggles began in October, leading to his admission to a hospital in New Delhi in January with the help of Afghan cricket star Rashid Khan and ACB chairman Mirwais Ashraf. Despite initial signs of improvement, Zadran’s health deteriorated due to infections, dengue, and a drop in red blood cell count. Former Afghanistan captain Asghar Afghan and other players offered continuous support during his treatment.
The Afghanistan Cricket Board praised Zadran’s dedication and service to Afghan cricket, highlighting his impact on and off the field. Describing him as an inspiration to young cricketers, the board emphasized his role in shaping the future of Afghan cricket and expressed deep condolences to his family, friends, and the cricket community.
