Former AIADMK MLA R. Vaithilingam, who recently resigned from his Orathanadu Assembly seat, officially became a member of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Wednesday. This move occurred at the DMK headquarters, Anna Arivalayam, with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin in attendance. Vaithilingam’s political journey has closely followed the internal dynamics of the AIADMK over the years.
He had a stint as the Housing Minister in the Tamil Nadu government and was once a close aide of late Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa. Initially supporting V. K. Sasikala after Jayalalithaa’s demise, Vaithilingam later shifted his allegiance to Edappadi K. Palaniswami. He played a crucial role in attempting to reconcile Palaniswami and O. Panneerselvam during a period of factional strife within the AIADMK.
Despite his efforts, the unity between Palaniswami and Panneerselvam was short-lived, leading to further internal conflicts within the AIADMK. Vaithilingam has since aligned himself with O. Panneerselvam and has been a steadfast supporter. His recent move to join the DMK, known as a strong supporter of Panneerselvam, is viewed as a significant political development. This shift is seen as part of a larger realignment of political forces ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, indicating the ongoing fragmentation within the AIADMK.
