Former Bangladesh cricket captain Tamim Iqbal has been chosen as the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board. He aims to enhance transparency, upgrade facilities, and rebuild the reputation of Bangladesh cricket after a tumultuous period. Tamim, aged 36, was the sole candidate in the recent elections held in Dhaka and will hold office for four years, following a two-month stint leading the board’s interim committee.
The elections took place at the Shere Bangla National Stadium after the government dissolved the previous board in April. A total of 23 directors were elected through physical and electronic voting, with two government-appointed representatives joining to form a 25-member governing body. Tamim, elected from the Dhaka clubs category, was unanimously selected as the board president. One of the vice-presidents is Fahim Sinha, while the second is yet to be named. Tamim’s key focus includes establishing a modern High Performance Centre, which he considers his top priority.
Expressing his views, Tamim emphasized the immense responsibility of his new role, stating that proving himself to everyone is crucial. He highlighted the need for respect towards players, both current and former, to restore Bangladesh cricket’s image. Addressing transparency and accountability concerns, Tamim assured maximum transparency and honesty in the board’s operations, aiming to rectify mistakes promptly.
Tamim, a highly esteemed figure in Bangladesh cricket, boasts a remarkable career with over 15,000 international runs in 391 matches across all formats. He led the national team in 38 matches, achieving notable victories, including a historic ODI series win against South Africa in 2022. Despite retiring from international cricket in early 2025, Tamim continued playing domestic cricket until a heart attack during a Dhaka Premier League match concluded his playing career.
