Prashant Barman, the former Block Development Officer (BDO) of Raiganj Block in West Bengal, who was accused of abducting and murdering a gold merchant in Kolkata, has been arrested. His arrest in New Town on the outskirts of Kolkata was dramatic, occurring after he hit a two-wheeler rider while driving intoxicated. Despite being confronted by locals and the police, he was detained and is now expected to appear in court.
Barman, associated with the Trinamool Congress, had been on the run since being accused of the murder last year. The incident involved the abduction and killing of the gold merchant in Salt Lake’s Dattabad. Despite obtaining anticipatory bail initially, the High Court later rejected it, leading to an arrest warrant being issued. Barman had been evading surrender since then, even after a Supreme Court order.
