Former Block Development Officer (BDO) Prashant Barman, accused in the abduction and murder of a gold trader, was arrested in New Town on the outskirts of Kolkata. Barman, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, clashed with police after a car accident. Despite his arrest, he continued to assert influence and misbehave with police officials.
Eyewitnesses reported that Barman refused to cooperate with police instructions and even attempted to sit in the middle seat of the police vehicle. He was taken to the Eco Park police station where he continued to misbehave. Police confiscated his phone, leading to further confrontation as Barman demanded its return.
Barman, a former BDO of Raiganj Block in West Bengal, had been on the run for a long time. His arrest followed a series of events starting with a car accident involving a two-wheeler rider. The Bidhannagar City Police detained him after he allegedly abused locals and resisted police instructions.
Police had been pursuing Barman since he was accused of the abduction and murder of gold merchant Swapan Kamilya. Despite obtaining anticipatory bail earlier, he failed to surrender, leading to an arrest warrant. Barman’s arrest was a dramatic turn of events following his prolonged evasion of law enforcement.
