Former fast bowler Abu Nechim has commended the Assam Premier League (APL) as a crucial platform for budding cricketers in the state. Nechim emphasized that the newly introduced franchise T20 tournament will offer essential exposure to undiscovered local talent. He mentioned that the league’s vast participation, with over 270 players in the auction, showcases the depth of talent in Assam, providing a stage for all players to showcase their skills.
Having represented India in the 2006 U19 World Cup and played domestic cricket for Assam, Nechim also had stints with Mumbai Indians (2010–2013) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (2014–2016) in the IPL. Nechim drew parallels between his cricket journey and the success story of Rajasthan Royals captain and Indian all-rounder Riyan Parag, underlining how the tournament bridges the gap between state-level cricket and elite platforms.
Neckim expressed optimism about the league’s potential to propel players towards the IPL or even the Indian national team, highlighting the significant opportunities the APL offers for the future of Assam cricket. The APL, under the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) with the motto ‘Aamar Axom, Aamar Gourab’ (Our Assam, Our Pride), features eight franchise teams from across the state. The inaugural tournament matches will be broadcast live on Star Sports and streamed on JioHotstar.
