Former England midfielder Danny Murphy has expressed his belief that Thomas Tuchel should not continue as England head coach, despite leading the team to their best FIFA World Cup finish in 60 years. Murphy argues that Tuchel’s tactical decisions in the semifinal defeat to Argentina ultimately cost England a spot in the final. Despite bouncing back with a 6-4 victory over France in the third-place playoff, with Bukayo Saka scoring a hat-trick, Murphy maintains that the bronze-medal finish does not overshadow what he perceives as a failed World Cup campaign.

Murphy criticized Tuchel’s conservative approach against Argentina, highlighting that England did not fully utilize their attacking talent. He expressed disappointment in the lack of forward thinking and creativity displayed by the team during the crucial match. Former England defender Stephen Warnock also joined in the criticism, questioning the decision to bench Bukayo Saka against Argentina and expressing disappointment in the team’s cautious play after taking the lead against the eventual finalists.

Warnock emphasized the importance of pace in England’s gameplay, particularly noting the absence of speed from players like Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford. He stressed the effectiveness of pace in stretching the pitch and creating challenges for defenders, suggesting that England missed out on utilizing this strategic advantage during the match against Argentina.
