Former Intelligence Bureau (IB) Special Director Anurag Kumar has assumed office as the new Commissioner of Delhi Police, taking over from outgoing Commissioner Satish Golcha. Anurag Kumar, a 1994-batch IPS officer of the AGMUT cadre, succeeds Golcha, who had been serving as the Delhi Police Commissioner since August last year. Despite Golcha’s tenure originally set to continue until April 2027, he was directed by the government to report to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.
Anurag Kumar’s return to his parent AGMUT cadre was sanctioned by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Thursday, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Following his transfer from the Intelligence Bureau, Kumar’s appointment as Delhi Police Commissioner was approved by the ACC. An official order stated, “With the approval of the Competent Authority, Anurag Kumar, IPS (AGMUT:1994), is hereby appointed as Commissioner of Police, Delhi, with effect from the date of assumption of charge and until further orders.”
With a wealth of experience spanning nearly 32 years in policing, administration, and intelligence operations, Kumar brings a high level of expertise in internal security and law enforcement to his new role as Delhi Police Commissioner. His tenure at the Intelligence Bureau involved handling critical portfolios related to national security, counter-terrorism strategy, intelligence gathering and analysis, and other sensitive security issues.
An engineering graduate, Anurag Kumar has been honored for his exceptional service with prestigious awards in policing, including the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2010 and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2016. As the Delhi Police Commissioner, Kumar will be responsible for overseeing security and law-and-order management in the national capital, which is home to significant constitutional and administrative establishments such as Parliament, Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Prime Minister’s Office, the Supreme Court, and various foreign embassies.
