Former Indian hockey player and Mumbai Hockey Association (MHA) secretary Gurbax Singh Grewal, a member of the 1968 Olympic Games bronze medal-winning national team, passed away in Chandigarh at the age of 84. Grewal, who hailed from Punjab, had a distinguished career both as a player and sports administrator.

Grewal, the brother of Olympian Balbir Singh, served as a Sports Officer with the Western Railways in Mumbai. He later became the Honorary Secretary of The Mumbai Hockey Association Ltd, alongside renowned figures like former India captain and coach Joaquim Carvalho. Born in 1942, Grewal moved to Mumbai in his youth to pursue hockey and represented Western Railways and the Indian Railways teams.

Known for his speed on the field, Grewal transitioned into coaching after his playing days. He coached various Mumbai teams and also had a stint with the Indian women’s hockey team. His contributions extended to sports administration as well, with his tenure as Honorary Secretary witnessing the renovation of MHA’s Mahindra Stadium in Mumbai.
